Women in Chichicastenango

From Jan. 14th on we’ll have to change the weekly fees. The new price for a week is 155 US-$ (165 US-$ from 1st of June till 15th of August).
Last weekend Álvaro Colom Caballeros was elected in a runoff ballot to be Guatemala’s next president. With 53% of the votes he won over Otto Pérez Molina, a former General who commanded troops during the civil war. Colom will follow Óscar Berger Perdomo in the term 2008 to 2012 and will be the first social-democratic president in Guatemala for more than 50 years.

Elections in Guatemala and in Quetzaltenango
On September 9th there were presidential elections in Guatemala. Two of the candidates will have to go through a second round on November 4th. Those candidates are Alvaro Colon from the political party UNE, and the militant Otto Pérez Molina.
Also on September 9th all citizens of Quetzaltenango elected a new mayor. The winner is Jorge Rolando Barrientos Pellecer from the political party GANA.In addition, during the week of September 12th through September 23rd the city celebrates the Independence fair. It is a big celebration that includes rides, typical food and local companies present their products and services.
News about the school
Right now we are hosting in group of missionaries that belong to the “Farm of the Child” organization. They are all voluntaries that are going to work in the orphanage “La Finca del Niño” in Honduras. The group will be studying with us for a total of 7 weeks.
In news regarding teachers Gabriel has decided to continue with Juan Sisay. The students and staff were delighted with his decision.
A new place in Xela
“Bohemios”, a bar where different alcoholic beverages and cocktails are served, opened recently. Furthermore there is the possibility of taking dance classes (salsa and meringue). It is located in the 5th calle 12-24, zone 1 in Quetzaltenango. The phone number is 5892 8861.
